This pet has been living in the house for 56 years! He survived 5 dogs, made 3 escape attempts and fell into the will of an aging mistress ...
Our today's heroine spent her 10th birthday in the company of a little turtle, which was presented to her by a friend of her father - the director of the zoo. 56 years later, the beloved pet is still keeping company with his mistress: he saw all the stages of her growing up, marriage, birth of children, and he survived 5 of her dogs!
Joanna Smith, originally from St. Paul, Minnesota, back in 1962, when she was presented with a pet, had no idea that the gopher tortoise would live with her all her life: “George must be my oldest friend. He is just a wonderful pet! ”
In childhood, in the summer, the family of a little girl then went to Dor County every weekend.
“George always traveled with us. He loved to walk along the shore of Lake Michigan. Wherever we go, George traveled with us everywhere. ”- says Joanna.
Another bright childhood memory is Halloween, when, together with the adored pet, the girl was transformed into a bee. So two funny insects went to collect sweets around.
"When I was little, I drove him in the basket of my bike," - the woman tells.
So it went day after day, year after year, and now the girl had a choice: where to go to study. She went to college, and she took the turtle with her to the hostel.
Then the next important stage followed - marriage.Joanna's bridegroom immediately realized that his lover was only paired with her pet.) And then he himself fell in love with funny George.
“He does not sit on his knees, and he cannot be taken for a walk. But he’s still an excellent pet, " - says Joanna
Over 56 years, other pets appeared in the family - there were 5 labradors in total, but George survived them: “In his lifetime, he has seen five dogs. Each of them managed to bark well at him. But look who laughs last! ”
The turtle has seen many adventures over the years of its youth. Experiencing a thirst for adventure, she ran away from home three times. The last time this happened in 1988, George then dug a tunnel under the fence.
All neighbors and family friends came together to help find the turtle. Then the local television channel even arrived at the scene, after which George was immediately found. It turned out that he was hiding under a bunch of leaves from neighbors in the yard!
But life in the Smith’s house is by no means the kind that I really would like to run away from. And now, for 30 years, the turtle has been happy with its family, not trying to escape to distant lands, and receives a portion of daily delicious salad for this.)
“I would say that George is flourishing. On Christmas morning, he always gets breakfast from strawberries and kiwi! ”
As it turned out, such turtles live only in warm climates, and since 1962 gophers in the southern states were generally included in the list of protected animals, so George is unique.
In the wild, turtles live on average 50-60 years, but at home gophers (they are also called polypheme gophers) may well live up to 100 years! So George can still outlive his mistress.
In such a case, a 66-year-old woman is already looking for a new home for her pet: “I have a daughter who has three children. When I am gone, George will live with them. It is written in my will! ”
It is a great happiness and luck to be with a pet, a best friend, almost all my life!
